CHAPTER
1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
As a student of language , we
should understand about language. We can understand it by learning linguistics.
Linguistics is relevance to language teaching. The language teaching profession
today has become more complex, and it has three main strands : 1)theoretical
contributions from linguistics, phsycology and social theory, 2) methodology
and teaching techniques, 3) aids and equipment.
And as we know that we will be
language teachers, so we have to know how language works. Acquaintance with basic linguistics concepts
can bring valuable insights to all language teachers. Some of these insight are derived from the
linguist’s attitude to speech in relation to writing, from the distinction
between form and meaning, from idea of language as structure and the idea that
grammatical structure has greatest importance in language teaching. This increased awareness of language should
make a language teacher more competent in his job.
In Linguistics, we will also
learn about Structural Linguistics, they are aims, procedures, phonemics,
phonemes. It will make us more
understand about language and use it well in communication, because linguistics can provide a rigorous
description of the language to be taught
as well as the native speaker. The prosedures of Linguistics will make us easier to used language by the
rule, such as how an intonation of
sentence, which word must be stressed, so that we know the position and
function of sentences. Because of that as the student of language, we realize
that Linguistics is very useful and important to be learnt. And it will make us to be a good language teacher
in the future.

Some main
research questions the writer would like to answer are as follows:
·
What is the aims and procedures of structural
linguistics?
·
What is phonemics?
·
What is distinguish of phonemes and allophones?
·
What kind of suprasegmental phonemes?
1.3 Purposes

The purpose of writing this paper
is to know about the aims and procedures of strucural linguistics and all about
phonemic.
CHAPTER 2
STRUCTURAL LINGUISTICS
STRUKTURAL
LINGUISTIK
2.1 Aims and Procedures
2.1
Tujuan dan Prosedur
We saw in
Chapter I that linguistics were called to the aid of language teaching in the
Second World War. They belonged to a school of linguistics which is usually
described as structural and associated with the name of Leonard Bloomfield,
whose book, Language, sets out the
main ideas of structural linguistics. The structuralist view of language
structure is associated with the ‘phoneme’ as the unit of phonology (the sound
system) and the ‘morpheme’ as the unit of grammar. Morphemes are made up of
combinations of phonemes, and sentences of combinations of morphemes. In other
words, phonemes and morphemes are
regarded as the building blocks of language.
The
first task of a linguist is to find out what the units or building blocks of a
language are. In order to do this, he follows certain techniques or “discovery
procedures”. First, the linguist discovers the phonemes and then morphemes of
the language before he moves on to syntactic analysis.
Tugas pertama ahli bahasa adalah untuk menemukan
apa bagian atau bahan penyusun dari bahasa itu. Tepatnya untuk melakukan ini,
dia mengikuti teknik tertentu atau “prosedur penemuan”. Pertama, Ahli bahasa
menyelidiki fonem dan kemudian morfem dari bahasa sebelum bergerak menuju
analisis sintaktis.
The
linguist is empirical and scientific in his approach. That is, he works
objectively with data he can test and verify.
What he does is to choose or collect a ‘corpus’ (or sample) of the language
he is investigating. This corpus is the
data that he works with and to which he applies the established procedures of
his discipline. His aim is to describe a
sample of language rather than the whole language because he cannot desribe
utterances which have not been produced or observed.
Ahli bahasa itu empiris dan ilmiah dalam
pendekatannya.
2.2 Phonemics
2.2 Fonemik
Before
going into a description of what the linguist does in phonemic analysis, I
should explain the difference between phonetics, phonology, dan phonemics. In phonetics we study speech sounds as sounds
in any human language but in phonology we study the speech sounds as they occur
in a particular language. This is, we
study the sounds as a system: how they contrast with one another and ways they
can combine with one another in the language.
To put it another way, in phonetics we analyse the sound stream into
segments in various ways (we looked at one way in Chapter 2); in phonology our
task is to understand how these segments function to make the sound stream meaningful
communication. In practice, however, the boundary between two is often
blurred. Phonemics is one way of looking
at the phonology of a language: feature analysis is another.
lain.
What
does the linguist in phonemic analysis
then? Since each language make use of limited number of sounds. He must find out what these sounds are. The
first step is to transcribe as accurately as possible the native speaker’s
utterances in phonetic symbols. He may
do this directly or use the tape recorder.
Next, he examines what has been transcribed in order to find a set of
utterances that are different in meaning and differ from each other in only one
respect phonetically (they differ minimally, as it is usually expressed). Short utterances will be best for his purpose,
because he wants as little difference as possible.
Kemudian, apa yang dilakukan ahli bahasa dalam
analisis fonemik? Karena setiap bahasa membuat jumlah batas penggunaan suara,
ia harus menemukan apa suara tersebut. Langkah pertama adalah mencatat seakurat
mungkin ucapan pembicara asli dalam simbol fonetik. Dia mungkin melakukannya
secara langsung atau menggunakan alat perekam. Kemudian, dia menguji apa yang
telah dituliskan dengan tujuan menemukan letak ucapan yang berbeda dan
membedakannya dari yang lainnya hanya dalam sesuatu yang penting secara fonetik
(mereka membedakan secara minimal, seperti apa yang sering diekspresikan).
Ucapan pendek akan menjadi sangat baik untuk tujuannya, karena dia menginginkan
perbedaan kecil yang mungkin.
2.3 English
Consonant Phonemes
2.3 Fonem Konsonan Bahasa Inggris
Let
us suppose he is doing a phonemic analysis of English. He could choose the
following set of words : pin, bin, sin,
which have different meanings. The words
pin and bin differ from each
other minimally. In that beginning (initial) sounds only are different-they are
both bilabial stops but the first is voiceless and the second voiced. If he
then compares bin and sin, he finds that they also differ only
in the initial consonant, though the difference is greater than between pin and bin. There is a difference is articulation in addition to a
difference in voice. However, he is not concerned with such detailed phonetic
differences here but only with differences leading to meaning differences. Such
pairs of words that differ in meaning because of a minimal difference in sound
are called minimal pairs; the sounds
that differ are said to be “in contrast”. The contrastive units he has
discovered so far are the beginning sounds /p/ /b/ and /s/. Whenever he can
establish a minimal pair he is sure he has two different phonemes as “the smallest significant unit of language”. It is
“significant” because it makes a difference in meaning. Notice that /p/ and /b/
have no meaning in themselves. But whether we choose to use /p/ or /b/ makes a
difference in meaning. (The symbols used for phonemes are enclosed between
slant lines to distinguish them from phonetic symbol within square brackets).
Mari kita ibaratkan ia sedang mengerjakan sebuah
analisa fonemik bahasa Inggris. Dia dapat memilih seperangkat kata-kata berikut
: pin, bin, sin, yang memiliki
perbedaan arti.
membedakan dikatakan menjadi “kontras”.
The
linguist could continue this process of finding minimal pairs by adding to pin, bin, sin, words like chin, din, fin, gin, kin, shin, tin, thin,
win. Since all the words appear to be minimally different from each other
he may hypothesize that English has a set of contrastively different initial
sounds : /tʃ, d, f, ʤ, k, ʃ, t, θ, w/. He wants to find out. However, whether
there are other initial contrastive units in order to get the complete set. He
goes back to the corpus. Therefore, to find further sets of words similar to
the ones above. He may set them out as in the sample list below.
Set Kontrastif Fonem

fin fat /f/

Dia mungkin mengaturnya seperti
dalam daftar contoh di bawah :
Set Kontrastif Fonem
bin bet bat /b/
shin ship /ʃ/
chin chat chip /tʃ/
din debt dip /d/
fin fat /f/
jin jet /dƺ/
ginn get /g/

let lip
/l/
vet vat /v/
Hat hip /h/
net nip /n/
He
could add to the list as he finds new contrastive sets. When he has verified
the actual contrastive units by this procedure. He can state that these are the
phonemes of English that occur in initial position.
Dia dapat menambahkan pada daftar setiap
menentukan set kontrastif baru. Ketika dia telah memeriksa unit kontrastif yang
sebenarnya dengan prosedur ini, dia dapat menyatakan bahwa ini adalah fonem
Bahasa Inggris yang terjadi di posisi awal.
The
contrastive units, or phonemes, that the linguist has discovered at the
beginnings of words may not be the only consonant phonemes in the language.
Since consonant occur at the end and middle of words as well as their
beginning. The linguist will therefore continue his search for contrastive
sets. This time at the end and middle of utterances. We noted earlier that in
the search for minimal pairs. Detailed phonetic differences that make no
difference in meaning can be ignored. Here is another instance. Native speaker of
English claim that the final sound of tap is the same as the initial sound of
pat although the former is unaspirated [p] and the latter aspirated [ph].
The linguist can ignore this phonetic difference because whether pat is pronounced [phӕt] or [pӕt] makes
no difference in meaning. Nearly all the contrastive units that occur initially
are therefore claimed to be the same as those that occur finally (at the ends
of words). Some contrastive sets for final sounds are shown on the next page.

Unit
Beberapa set kontrastif
untuk suara akhir ditunjukkan pada halaman berikutnya

This
process of searching for contrastive units at the beginning, middle and end of
utterances will discover all the consonant phonemes of English, which are shown
on the front cover.
Proses penelitian ini untuk unit kontrastif pada
awal, tengah dan akhir ungkapan akan meneliti semua fonem konsonan bahasa
Inggris yang ditunjukkan di sampul depan.
2.4 English
Vowels
2.4 Vokal Bahasa Inggris
The
vowels phonemes of English could be discovered by the same procedure of looking
for minimal pairs. English contains many short utterances that differ only in
the vowel sound, e.g. peat, pit, pet,
pat: pull, pool; pot, port; come, calm; and so on. However, the analysis of
the vowel system of English will result in more differences than the analysis
of the consonant system because of different dialects and different varieties
of English, e.g. American English, British English, Australian English and so
on. The important thing is that teachers of English should consistently use one
system only, in order to avoid confusion.
Fonem vokal Bahasa Inggris dapat diteliti oleh
pencarian prosedur yang sama untuk minimal pairs. Bahasa Inggris memiliki
banyak ungkapan pendek yang hanya membedakan dalam suara vokal, contoh peat, pit, pet, pat; pull, pool; pot, port;
come, calm; dan sebagainya. Akan tetapi, analasis sistem vokal Bahasa
Inggris akan menghasilkjkan lebih banyak perbedaan dialek dan perbedaan variasi
bahasa Inggris, contoh Inggris Amerika, Inggris British, Inggris Australia dan
sebagainya. Hal yang penting adalah bahwa guru bahasa Inggris secara konsisten
hanya menggunakan satu sistem, dalam rangka untuk menghindari kebingungan.
2.5 Phonemes
dan Allophones
2.5 Fonem dan Allofon
From the procedure of finding the
contrastive units of sound that make a difference in meaning. We have said that
a phoneme is the smallest unit of sound that makes a difference in meaning in a
language. We have defined it through the principle of contrast. We cannot speak
of a phoneme in general. A phoneme is always a unit of sound in a particular
language. We can say English has a /p/ phoneme and Malay also has a /p/ phoneme
but the two phonemes may be realised differently in the two languages.
bahasa.
The
linguist thinks of an individual speech sound as a “phone”. The phoneme is
based on a phone, and may take different phonetic forms but is regarded as the same phoneme,
e.g. aspirated and unaspirated [p] in pat
and tap. In such cases, the phonetic
differences are predictable. That is to say, only certain variants will occur
in certain positions, they are said to be in complementary distribution. In
English, for example, we find that the stops /p/, /t/, and /k/ are aspirated in
initial position and unaspirated in other position. Another example is the
English /l/ phoneme. Two varieties have
been distinguished: “clear” [l] and “dark” [l]. Their pattern of distribution
is as follows : “clear” [l] occurs only before vowels and and before /j/ while
“dark” [l] occurs before all other consonant and finally. Thus we find “clear”
[l] in light, love, along, million /miljən/
and “dark” [l] in feel, little. Such
variants are called allophones of that phoneme. According to our examples
above, all the variations of /p/, /t/, /k/ and /l/ respectively. In short,
allophones are variants of a phoneme, and are in complementary
distribution (i.e. where one variant
occurs, the others do not).
Ahli bahasa memikirkan sebuah bunyi bicara individu
sebagai “fon”. Fonem didasarkan pada sebuah fon, dan mungkin mengambil bentuk
fonetik yang berbeda tetapi diperhatikan sebagai fonem yang sama, contohnya [p]
yang disertai hembusan nafas dan tidak disertai hembusan nafas dalam pat dan tap. Dalam banyak kasus, fonetik yang berbeda dapat diprediksikan.
Dapat dikatakan, hanya varian tertentu yang akan terjadi dalam posisi tertentu,
mereka dikatakan menjadi distribusi komplementer. Dalam Bahasa Inggris, sebagai
contoh, kita menemukan bahwa stops /p/, /t/ dan /k/ adalah disertai hembusan
nafas di posisi lain. Contoh lainnya adalah fonem Inggris /I/. Kedua variasi
2.6 Suprasegmental Phonemes
2.6 Suprasegmental Fonem
In addition
to finding the consonant and vowel segments (the segmental phonemes), the
linguist must also identify the suprasegmental phonemes used in a language
system. They include things like pitch, stress, intonation and juncture. They
are called “supresegmental” because they can occur only with the segmental
phonemes, they are imposed on the segmental phonemes. Basically, the method
used in the same as that employed in looking for the segmental phonemes. That
is, whether a certain feature contrast with another and the contrasts exist in
minimal pairs. The analysis of suprasegmental phonemes is more complicated than
segmental phonemes and linguists tend to differ in their analysis.
Pitch
differences may result in differences of meaning at the word level. In the tone
languages like Thai and Chinese, the height and/or direction (up-down contrast
level) of pitch can distinguish words. In Chinese, for example, there are four
tones, which can distinguish words. If you say /t∫u/ with a high level pitch it
means “pig” but if you say /t∫u/ with a falling and rising pitch it means
“lord”. A beginner of Chinese may therefore wrongly say “I praise the pig” when
he means “I praise the lord”. Pitch is therefore phonemic in Chinese, because
it can distinguish between pairs of words like the above.
Pitch
mungkin salah mengatakan "Saya memuji babi"
ketika ia berarti "Saya memuji Tuhan". Karenanya, pitch adalah fonemik dalam bahasa Cina,
karena itu dapat membedakan antara pasangan kata seperti di atas.
Stress is
the degree of loudness given to some syllables in relation to others. The significance
of stress at the word level can be illustrated by its use in English. Minimal pairs
like the following show that stress is phonemic in English.
Stres adalah derajat dari kerasnya suara yang diberikan
pada beberapa suku kata dalam hubungan pada lainnya. Stres yang penting pada
tingkat kata dapat diilustrasikan oleh penggunaannya dalam bahasa Inggris.

dalam makna.
It
is usual to describe English as having four degrees of stress, but for the
purpose of teaching English as a second language there is a simpler analysis.
According to this analysis, there are two kinds of stress: fixed stress an
variable stress. Words or more than one syllable have fixed while monosyllabic
words have variable stress.
Hal itu adalah biasa untuk menggambarkan Bahasa
Inggris yang memiliki empat tingkatan stres, tetapi untuk tujuan pengajaran
Bahasa inggris sebagai bahasa kedua ada analisis yang lebih mudah. Berdasarkan
analisis ini, ada dua macam stres : stres teratur dan variabel stres. Kata-kata
yang lebih dari satu suku kata memiliki stres teratur sedangkan kata-kata
bersuku kata satu memiliki variabel stres.
There are only two degrees of
fixed stress: prominent stress and weak stress (or no stress), so that in
language teaching the teacher need only worry about which syllable in a word
gets the prominent stress, e.g.
ĥappy administer
before adminisťration
exćiting ŕidicule
śatisfy riďiculous
Hanya
ada dua tingkatan stres tertentu : stress menonjol dan stres lemag (atau tidak
ada stres), sehingga dalam pengajaran bahasa guru hanya perlu mencemaskan
tentang suku kata mana dalam kata yang mendapatkan stres menonjol, contohnya,
ĥappy administer
before adminisťration
exćiting ŕidicule
śatisfy riďiculous
Words of one syllable do have
stress, as is evident when we say the following words in a list with other
words: apple, pear, orange, peach,
cherry, grape. But whether they are stressed or not in sentences depends on
their position or function in the sentence-hence, variable stress. For example,
in the sentence: He thinks as a child
thinks, the first thinks is
stressed but the second is not. Here is another example: Q. How many times? A.
Four times. In the question times is stressed but in the answer it is not. As a
general rule, the more important a word is in a sentence the stronger is its
stress. In the absence of special emphasis, the most important words are nouns,
adjectives, demonstrative and interrogative, pronouns, principal verbs and
adverbs. Such words are therefore usually strongly stressed, e.g
I ńever ĺent her
ťhat ďress.
But if we
wish to emphasize the word I or her or that, then we would have three different
ways of stressing the sentence:
(1) Í ńever lent her that ďress,
(2) I ńever lent ĥer that dress.
(3) I ńever ĺent her ťhat dress.
Notice the
change in meaning with the change in stress: (1) means someone else lent her
that dress; (2) means I lent it someone else an (3) means I lent her a
different dress, on that one.
Kata-kata
bersuku kata satu benar-benar memiliki stres, yang jelas ketika kita mengatakan
kata berikut dalam daftar dengan kata lain : apple, pear, orange, peach,
cherry, grape. Tetapi apakah mereka ditekan atau tidak dalam kalimat tergantung
pada posisi mereka atau fungsi dalam kalimat – karena itu, variabel stres.
Sebagai contoh, dalam kalimat : He thinks as a child thinks, stres yang pertama
ditekan tetapi yang kedua tidak. Berikut adalah contoh lainnya :Q. How many
times? A. Four times. Dalam pertanyaan times ditekan tetapi dalam jawaban
tidak. Sebagai aturan umum, kata yang lebh penting adalah dalam kalimat yang
stresnya lebih kuat. Pada ketidakadaan penekanan khusus, kata yang paling
penting adalah kata benda, kata sifat, demonstratif dan interogatif pronoun,
prinsip kata kerja dan adverb. Karenanya banyak kata yang biasanya ditekan
secara kuat, contoh.
I ńever ĺent her ťhat ďress.
Tetapi jika kita berharap untuk menekan kata I atau her,
atau that, kemudian kita akan memiliki tiga cara yang berbeda dari penekanan
kata:
(1) Í ńever
lent her that ďress,
(2) I ńever
lent ĥer that dress.
(3) I ńever
ĺent her ťhat dress.
Perhatikan perubahan dalam makna dengan perubahan dalam
stres : (1) seseorang yang lainnya meminjamkan dia baju itu; (2) berarti saya
meminjamkan dia baju yang berbeda, bukan hanya yang satu itu.
There is another category of
stress associated with polysyllabic words. When such words are given special
emphasis in a sentence, we get what is called extra-prominent stress, since a
stronger stress is given to the prominent stress in the word. For example, in
the sentence: He gave me some honey, if
you emphasise honey to make it clear you were not given money, then the word
honey gets extra-prominent stress. If you emphasise fifty in He paid fifty dollars then fifty has extra-prominent stress.
Ada kategori lain dari stres yang diasosiasikan
dengan kata bersuku kata banyak. Ketika banyak kata diberikan penekanan khusus
dalam kalimat, kita mendapatkan apa yang disebut stres extra-menonjol, karena
stres yang lebih kuat diberikan pada stres menonjol dalam kata. Sebagai contoh,
dalam kalimat : He gave me some money,
jika anda menekan honey untuk membuatnya jelas kamu tidak memberikan uang
(money), kemudian kata honey mendapa stres extra-menonjol. Jika anda menekan
fifty dalam He paid fifty dollars
kemudian fifty memiliki stres
extra-menonjol.
We have seen that stress can make
a difference in meaning at both word and sentence level in English. Pitch is
used to contribute to meaning at the sentence level by a sequence of
constractive pitch level which constitute intonation. In speech the pitch of
the voice is constantly changing. When the pitch of the voice rises we have
rising intonation; when it falls we have falling intonation; when it remains on
note for some time, we have level intonation. The way intonation functions in
English may be illustrated by the sentence: She
is a singer.
(a) She is a singer.
This is the intonation contour
for a declarative statement
(b) She is a singer?
This
is the intonation contour for a question (and also for unfinished groups, e.g,
If you go…)
|
kita memiliki tingkatan intonasi. Fungsi intonasi dalam Bahasa Inggris mungkin
diilustrasikan oleh kalimat;
(a) she is
a singer.
Ini
adalah bentuk garis intonasi untuk pernyataan deklaratif.
|
(b) She is
a singer?
Ini adalah bentuk intonasi untuk pertanyaan (dan
juga untuk grup yang tidak selesai contoh If you go......)
|
By
changing the falling intonation at the end of sentence (a) into a rising
intonation we have changed a statement of fact into a question. If the pitch of
voice rises very high at the end of (b), it expresses surprice. The two
intonation contour shown above are the two fundamental tunes in English. The
example given in the next paragraph also illustrate the two fundamental tunes
in English.
Dengan mengubah intonasi turun di akhir kalimat
(a) pada intonasi naik kita telah mengubah pernyataan fakta menjadi sebuah
pertanyaan. Jika pitch suara naik sangat tinggi diakhir pada (b), itu
mengekspresikan terkejut. Kedua bentuk garis intonasi di atas menunjukkan dua
nada yang fundamental dalam Bahasa Inggris. Contoh yang diberikan dalam
paragraf berikutnya juga menggambarkan dua nada yang fundamental dalam Bahasa
Inggris.
There are various ways of
representing intonation. One is by the use of lines as above. For practical
teaching purposes, and good way of representing intonation is that used by Ward
in The Phonetics of English. In this notation, lines indicate stressed and dot
unstressed syllables. A straight
shows that
the pitch of the syllable is level and
and that the pitch falls or rises
respectively. (Where the pitch rises on an unstressed syllable, it is
represented by a line.) For example:
Did you give
it to her?
Can I help
you?
Have you
been here long?
Is Tom
coming?

Ada cara yang bervariasi dari representasi
intonasi. Salah satunya adalah dengan menggunakan garis seperti di atas. Untuk
tujuan praktek pengajaran, cara lain yang baik dari representasi intonasi
adalah yang digunakan oleh Ward dalam The Phonetics of English. Dalan notasi
ini, garis mengindikasi penekanan dan titik suku kata yang tidak diberi
tekanan. Sebuah garis lurus menunjukkan bahwa pitch turun dan naik secara
berturut-turut. (Dimana pitch naik pada sebuah suku kata tanpa tekaknan,
direpresentasikan oleh sebuah garis) sebagai contoh :
Did you give it to her?
Can I help you?
Have you been here long?
Is Tom coming?
Tell him to go.
I cannot come.
She seemed angry.
In that case / you must go.
A few miles further on / the road ended.
The girl in pink / is his sister in law.
Juncture is the type of
connection or pause we get between syllables words. In English, for example,
syllable may be connected together very closed without pause (close juncture)
or very loosely (open juncture) so that there seems to be a pause between them
in pronunciation. The two types of juncture can be illustrated by the minimal
pair: night rate / nait + reit (+ is used for open juncture) and nitrate /
naitreit/. The operation of juncture between words is exemplified in difference
between the pairs of utterances below:
1. an aim / ən + eim/ 1. That’s tough /ðæts + tΛf/
2. a name / ə + neim/ 2. That stuff / ðæt + stΛf/
Juncture
bawah :
1. An aim / ən + eim/ 1.
That’s rough / ðӕts + t ʌ f /
2. A name / ə + neim/ 2. That
stuff / ðӕt + st ʌ f /

Conclusion
The aims of structural
linguistics is to describe a sample of language rather than the whole lannguage
because it can not describe utterance which have not been produced or observed.
Phonemics is one way of looking at the phonology of a language : feature
analysis is another. A phoneme is the smallest unit of sounds that makes a
difference in meaning in a language. An Allophones is variants of a phoneme,
and is in complementary distribution
(i.e. where one variant occurs, the others do not). Kinds of suprasegmental
phonemes are pitch, stress, intonation, and juncture.

As a language teacher , we have
to know all about the structural linguistics.
